Tips For Keeping Your Kid Safe From Asbestos During Home Renovations

Heather Willis

If you are a homeowner, you might decide that you want to add on extra rooms to your house or do some other renovation that will allow you make your house more valuable. However, if you are also a parent, you need to make sure that your child stays safe throughout the renovations. One major source of potential danger is asbestos that might have been used for insulation in your home that you didn't know about. Here are some tips for keeping your kid safe from asbestos during home renovations.

1. Talk to Contractors

Your first step is to make sure that you talk to contractors and have them notify you of whether they find asbestos. They will be sure to do so. If the contractor that you have already hired has EPA-certified asbestos removal training, he or she can take care of the asbestos as much as possible. If he or she is not certified in asbestos removal, you will need to find a second contractor to remove the asbestos before the renovating contractor can continue his or her work.

2. Take Your Kid Elsewhere

During the process of asbestos removal, it will be relatively safe for adults to be in the area because the contractor will be able to control the fibers and because the adults are large enough to not be significantly affected. However, kids can be more susceptible, especially if they have a condition such as asthma. Play it safe and take your child to a hotel or to the house of a friend while the asbestos is being removed.

3. Vent Your Home

Finally, in order to be sure that you are able to get rid of all of the fibers in your home, talk to the asbestos removal contractor about venting your home and blowing the remaining fibers out of your ducts and other crannies in your house with a fan or other object. This will allow you to make sure that you can bring your child back into the house without him or her getting sick. If you are especially worried, having your child wear a face mask for the first few days after you get back can help reduce the number of fibers that he or she inhales because the mask will filter it out.
